The Springfield Police Department Traffic Section is proud to announce the availability of the Share the Road civilian motorcycle course, designed to equip experienced riders with the skills and techniques necessary to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes.

What to Expect

The one-day course, open to the public, focuses on advanced riding techniques, motorcycle handling, object avoidance, and other essential skills to ensure a safer riding experience. Participants will learn how to:

  • Improve their motorcycle handling skills, including cornering, braking, and acceleration.
  • Enhance their object avoidance techniques, including recognizing potential hazards and avoiding obstacles.
  • Develop strategies for reducing stress and improving their overall riding experience.

Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, participants will gain the knowledge and confidence needed to ride safely and effectively.

Course Requirements

To participate in the Share the Road course, riders must meet the following qualifications and equipment requirements:

Requirement Details
A valid motorcycle endorsement Riders must hold a valid motorcycle endorsement, not a permit.
A motorcycle Riders must have a motorcycle with a minimum engine size of 250cc, excluding three-wheel vehicles.
Legal exhaust and handlebars All motorcycles must have legal exhaust and handlebars, such as those with a minimum height of 27 inches.
Street-legal motorcycle All motorcycles must be street-legal and subject to inspection.
Motorcycle insurance Riders must have motorcycle insurance that meets Missouri state regulations.
A DOT-approved helmet Riders must wear a DOT-approved helmet to ensure their safety.
Eye protection Riders must wear eye protection, such as goggles or glasses.
Proper footwear Riders must wear footwear that covers their ankles.
Proper motorcycle attire Riders must wear proper motorcycle attire, including gloves and jacket.
Optional equipment Riders may wear optional equipment, such as armored or padded motorcycle gear.
Signed liability waiver Riders must sign a liability waiver to participate in the course.

Course Dates and Registration

The next course offering in 2025 is scheduled for Saturday, May 17. Riders interested in attending can fill out an interest application, which must be received by Thursday, May 15 at noon. Additional course dates in 2025 include June 14, September 6, and October 11.
