Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month is being highlighted at May Day in the Bay, an event that brings together motorcycle enthusiasts and the community to promote motorcyclist safety and mental health awareness. May is a significant month for motorcycle safety, and the Northwestern Ontario Motorcycle Safety Training Organization is taking steps to raise awareness and promote safety on the roads. Greg Stein, president and chief instructor of the organization, emphasizes the importance of motorcycle safety, particularly during the winter months when motorcyclists are more vulnerable. โMotorcyclists are vulnerable road users, and they don’t have the same level of protection as other road users, such as cars and trucks,โ Stein said. โWe want to promote safe motorcycling and encourage other road users to be aware of motorcyclists on the road.โ
The event, held at 94 Vibert Road South, Oliver Paipoonge, featured a motorcycle smash, where attendees could donate $5 and take a swing at the motorcycle. The motorcycle was donated by Excalibur Motorcycle Works and was hung up like a piรฑata by GC Crane Rentals. The event also included a motorcycle racing group exhibition, with several groups represented, and prizes were given out every hour. Local dealers donated prizes, and attendees could meet staff from the organization and learn more about motorcycle safety. Stein also highlighted the importance of mental health awareness during the event. โMay is also mental health awareness month, and we want to use this opportunity to raise awareness and promote mental health,โ he said. Bikers Against Child Abuse in Thunder Bay was also present at the event, with Shortround, PR officer, speaking about the organization’s mission and goals. โWe’re here to help kids, and the more people we can reach, the better,โ Shortround said. โMental health is a big factor in all things related to child abuse, and we’re trying to spread the word of our existence and the importance of mental health.โ
The organization is supporting mental health awareness and is working to empower kids who have been affected by child abuse.
โChild abuse is an endemic issue, and it’s our job to make sure that those kids don’t feel like they’re ever alone,โ
